PVC flooring - interesting facts about vinyl flooring

Whether tile look for the kitchen or bathroom or wood look for the living room: PVC floor coverings are so versatile in terms of design that they can be used as floor coverings for almost all living areas. In recent years, the manufacturing process of PVC floor coverings has been significantly improved and modernised. This is one of the reasons why polyvinyl chloride is one of the best-selling resilient floor coverings today. In addition to its incredibly low price, its durability in particular is considered an immense advantage. Thanks to these two aspects, PVC flooring and vinyl flooring in rolls are ideal for large areas, public spaces or the industrial sector.

PVC flooring or CV flooring (vinyl)

PVC floors are convincing in every respect. PVC flooring can be laid quickly and cut to size to suit any room size without any problems. PVC is ideal for wet areas because of its smooth surface. It has no joints where water can penetrate and destroy the PVC floor.

In this article we summarise what you need to look out for when buying and present our current cheapest PVC offers. In recent times, due to constant technical and material progress, new product names have appeared which often cause confusion. For example, we now often read and hear about CV flooring. What is the difference? CV flooring is also PVC flooring, or more precisely, it is a material name that also gives the name to the PVC flooring family. CV describes a specific flooring structure.
This flooring consists of a foam backing to which a visible, often textured PVC layer is applied. Thus, CV flooring belongs to the same product category, but is differentiated from its pure counterpart by the foamed, thicker and overall softer underside. With us you will find a huge selection of modern, attractive and at the same time reliable PVC collections, versatile and flexible in use.
Nowadays, potentially hazardous plasticisers are avoided in production and harmless substances are used. This is what makes vinyl so interesting, because the flooring combines all the beneficial properties of polyvinyl chloride, is environmentally friendly and poses no health concerns. In Europe, strict requirements are set for the production of PVC flooring.

Vinyl is a plastic, more precisely polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These floor coverings were already popular in the 1960s. They are still used today in kitchens, living rooms, offices and public buildings. Even then, the advantages of PVC as a floor covering were recognised. The material is inexpensive and durable, is water and dirt repellent, easy to clean and available in many colours and designs.
PVC flooring not only offers versatile floor designs and many other advantages, but is also constantly evolving through more modern manufacturing processes and technologies. This very fact has contributed significantly to PVC becoming the best-selling resilient flooring. Other outstanding features that speak for modern floor coverings are their enormous durability and unbeatable low price. These two advantages are primarily the reason why PVC flooring is also very popular in public, commercial and industrial buildings. In addition, there is a high level of hygiene and an almost unlimited choice of designs.

What should you look for when buying PVC flooring?

The wear layer is important for use, and there are different classes here. They fall into three categories. These wear categories are in turn subdivided into different use classes (NK):
  • Use in private (normal) areas, use class 21, 22 and 23.
  • Use in commercial (intensive) public areas, NK 31, 32, 33, 34
  • Use in industry, NK 41, 42 and 43
PVC floors face different challenges in different rooms and applications. By choosing the right class, you can find the perfect PVC flooring for your needs. Class 33/43 vinyl floors are designed to withstand the heaviest loads in high traffic areas. They are often used in commercial and industrial environments that are subject to heavy use.
Floors in supermarkets, hospitals and healthcare facilities tend to be exposed to higher levels of stress. Here, the floors have to withstand heavy use on a daily basis. We recommend vinyl floors with a three as the first digit. The higher the load and intensity of use, the higher the second digit in the performance class should be. With a performance class of 33, you have a vinyl floor that is specifically designed for commercial use and can withstand heavy use.
The higher the usage class, the more durable the flooring. The following applies to the usage classes: If you purchase a floor covering with NK 31, you can also use it for use classes 21-23, i.e. in the children's room, living room or kitchen.

How is PVC flooring installed?

You can install a PVC floor yourself in just a few simple steps. You will need a cutter knife, pencil, possibly a notched trowel to spread the adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape.
You may also need impact sound insulation. Store the PVC roll in the area where you are installing the flooring for about 48 hours before installation. The humidity should not exceed 60 % and the temperature should be between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. This allows the floor to adapt to the room climate and makes it easier to install. Before you enjoy your new floor, carefully check the subfloor: if it has unevenness or holes, prepare it with a levelling compound. Tile joints can also press through a PVC floor in the long run.
Remove the old floor covering completely, including the remains of the old adhesive. Under no circumstances should the new covering be laid over carpet, as this is not rigid enough. Make sure the surface is clean, smooth and even. Use knee pads during the job, this will make the work easier. Now unroll the floor and press it into the corners with the carpet ruler. Leave an expansion gap of 1 mm to the wall. When laying the PVC floor, joints may appear depending on the size of the room. To cut, lay the two PVC floors on top of each other and trim them together. Then attach to the surface with double-sided adhesive tape.
To glue the PVC flooring over the entire surface, roll up the flooring again on one side after cutting. Apply the adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. The floor can only be walked on after the adhesive has dried completely. Then finally attach the skirting boards.

Cleaning and maintenance

The hygiene bonus of PVC floors is an important purchase criterion. PVC floors are particularly suitable for pet owners, allergy sufferers or even in rented flats. Correct installation creates a continuous surface with a modern floor covering that can be cleaned easily and thoroughly. Substances such as dust, hair or food residues hardly stand a chance. They do not stick to the top surface and can usually be removed quickly and without leaving any residue. With PVC floors, you achieve a high level of hygiene in your living space that can be seen in the truest sense of the word. Cleaning and maintaining hygienic PVC floors is child's play. The smooth surface of the products leaves no room for bacteria in PVC rolls and makes cleaning quick and easy. For stubborn stains, add a (non-aggressive) cleaning agent to the cleaning water.
